Science SummerScience Summer courses are offered during Summer Sessions only. Our next series of Science Summer courses will meet June 8 - August 14, 2009. Entry-level Communication Sciences and Disorders and Nursing Applicants: The MGH Institute offers prerequisite classes each summer known as "Science Summer". Students who are accepted into the Institute, but have not completed the prerequisites, may take these summer classes to fulfill the requirements immediately prior to matriculation. Science Summer courses can serve as excellent introductions, reviews, or preparation for people planning to take challenge examinations or to satisfy pre-requisites for the Institute's entry-level Nursing and Communications Sciences and Disorders program. Please note: CD410, CD411, CD412, CD413, HP402, HP450 and HP451 each carry 3 undergraduate college credits. HP404 and HP405 do not carry transferable credit; they are 0 credit courses taken as pass/fail. On a space available basis, Non-Degree students may also take these courses. Science Summer 2009 - Course ListingsCD 410-01 - INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION DISORDERS Prerequisite: None. Students will be given an overview of the nature and causes of disorders of communication and swallowing, and the clinical processes related to their evaluation and treatment. All students will participate in guided opportunities to observe and interpret actual clinical interactions. Faculty: To Be Announced Credits: 3 non graduate Offered: To Be Announced CD 411-01 - PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION AND INTRODUCTION TO ACOUSTIC PHONETICS Prerequisite: None. Training will be provided in using the International Phonetic Alphabet to transcribe sounds of American English, including experience with influences of dialect and speech disorders. An introduction to the fundamentals of the physics of sound and acoustic phonetics will also be provided. This course covers basic anatomy and physiology of speech mechanisms, including respiratory, laryngeal, and supraglottal systems. A particular focus is basic science foundations and application to clinical problem-solving. The course serves as a foundation for several other courses. This course will provide students with a basic overview of normal speech and language development. Theories of language acquisition will be introduced and morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics will be addressed. Beginning with a review of anatomy and physiology of the ear, this course meets the ASHA minimum requirement for study of the pathologies of the auditory system and assessment of auditory disorders, including hearing screening, hearing measurement, and differential diagnosis of hearing loss. This course will focus on topics and concepts integrated from chemistry, which are crucial to clinical nursing practice. Selected areas of general, organic, and biochemistry will be covered. Various topics will be related to human physiology, pharmacology, etc. This course is prerequisite to the first semester of the Nursing Program. Equivalent course work may be acceptable to meet these requirements. This is a basic level course and will offer the beginning nursing student with a practical knowledge of the concepts of microbiology. Content will focus on the areas of microbiology most pertinent to the clinical practice of nursing. This course is prerequisite to the first semester of the Nursing Program. Pass/Fail grading only. This course will focus on the functions, source, and utilization of macronutrients, vitamins/minerals, and fluid. Special needs of pregnant/lactating women, infants, children, and adolescents will be discussed. This course will also cover components of the four major categories of nutritional assessment, various dietary recommendations based on nutrition standards i.e. RDA, and weight management issues. This course is prerequisite to the first semester of the Nursing Program. Equivalent course work may be acceptable to meet these requirements. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of human anatomy. The structure of all organ systems will be covered in depth. Computer simulations will be utilized. This course is prerequisite to the first semester of the Nursing Program. Equivalent course work may be acceptable to meet these requirements.
